Brain Tumor Patients Using CAM Therapies

HAMBURG, Germany—Approximately 40 percent of patients with incurable brain tumors have used complementary and alternative therapies, including the use homeopathic remedies and vitamins, according to a new study

(Neurology. 14 Dec 2010;75:2229-2235). The study, conducted by the German Glioma Network, supported by the German Cancer Aid, involved 621 people with incurable grade II to grade IV gliomas who completed questionnaires about their use of alternative therapies. Of the patients using alternative therapies, 39 percent used homeopathy, 31 percent used vitamin supplements, and 29 percent used various psychological methods; 70 percent of the patients using such therapies had done so within the past 12 months.
